Supplying Full Bulk Water In-Field Sugarcane Project in Tanzania

In 2017, Netafim was contracted to grow sugarcane in Tanzania by the Bakhresa Group, a private company with operations in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Rwanda and many other African countries.

Our client wanted to cultivate as much sugarcane as possible but wasn’t sure how. We conducted a hydrological assessment that led to the conclusion that only 2,000 hectares could be cultivated with the limited availability of water in the area. However, thanks to our innovative planning and design, our experts managed to increase the total area by an additional 10%, for a total of 2,200 cultivated hectares.

In 2017, we built a nursery covering an area of 8 hectares to decide on the varieties of sugarcane that could be grown. This was followed by the implementation of a first phase over area of 200 hectares, including bulk water supply and in-field irrigation. The results were remarkable! 170 tons per hectare in the nursery seedling plot compared to the projected 30 tons per hectare expected by the client! They could not have been more pleased.

After the amazing achievements in only 18 months, Netafim is now in the process of scaling the project into the second phase, covering an area of 2,000 hectares.
